Frequently Asked Questions

What programs and times are available to learn ELS?

GLI offers two program options for those looking to gain mastery of English as a second language:

  • During the standard academic year (fall, winter and spring)
  • During the summer months

How does the academic year program work?

During the academic year, you may enroll in individual ESL courses designed to strengthen specific language skills such as professional writing, academic communication and advanced conversation.

There are three academic quarters per year at UC San Diego, each lasting 10 weeks, with final exams typically held in Week 11. The dates for the 2026–2027 academic year are as follows:

  • Fall Quarter: begins Sept. 21, 2026
  • Winter Quarter: begins  Jan. 4, 2027
  • Spring Quarter: begins March 24, 2027

These flexible courses allow you to continue developing your English while balancing work or academic commitments.

How does the Summer Program work?

This full-time, immersive experience is designed to help you improve your English quickly while preparing for academic study or professional advancement.

Students may choose the program format that best fits their schedule:

  • 10-week program (Sessions I & II): June 29 – Sept. 4, 2026
  • 5-week Session I: June 29 – July 30, 2026
  • 5-week Session II: Aug. 3 – Sept. 4, 2026

Each 5-week session introduces new material, and you can enroll in one or both. Sample Summer Courses may include:

  • Speaking and Presentation Skills
