  • Nancy Gilson

    Nancy Gilson

    Nancy holds a Ph.D. in political science from UC Berkeley. She taught for seven years at Simmons College in Boston before moving to UC San Diego in 1993. Since coming to San Diego, Nancy has been a full-time lecturer, teaching courses for the Department of Political Science, GPS and the International Studies Program on U.S. and European immigration, the politics of race and ethnicity, civil liberties and civil rights law, and social policy. She spent five years teaching full time in the DOC Program. In addition to teaching, Nancy served three years as assistant dean of academic advising at Earl Warren College, working with central campus administration units to bring technology into advising in the six colleges, and developing transitional programs for transfer students and winter admits.

    Jerry is a graduate of UC San Diego with a B.A in communication and minor in sociology. Prior to transitioning to the Student Affairs Office, he worked in the Admissions Office at GPS. He also has prior experience working at UC San Diego’s Financial Aid Office and at University of San Diego’s Graduate Admissions Office. Jerry is responsible for the oversight and interface with the student organizations at GPS. He has prior experience working with the student group, Alternative Breaks @ UCSD, which cultivates globally conscious active leaders through direct service and education.

    Laurie has been working with UC San Diego graduate students since 2005. In her current role at the School of Global Policy and Strategy, Laurie is one of the academic advisors for all degree programs. She also manages student employment, fellowships and scholarships. Before joining GPS, Laurie worked as a Graduate Advisor and Program Coordinator at the Rady School of Management managing academic affairs and advising for their specialized programs. She has a bachelor’s degree in Psychology from UC Riverside.

  • Jessica Banderas

    Jessica Banderas is the Student Affairs Coordinator at GPS. Jessica helps triage student concerns, manages room reservations, oversees petitions, supervises student interns and serves as a resource guide for students and faculty. Prior to working at GPS, Jessica worked with youth before transitioning to higher education. She has previously worked in student services where she advised students and coordinated events for a university. Jessica has bachelor’s degree in literature and writing, as well as an M.A. in English. Jessica is passionate about advocating for students and currently oversees the GPS Food Pantry and provides hygiene products in restrooms. She collaborates with her colleagues in coordinating events such as the Dean’s Reception, Commencement, Prep and other GPS affiliated functions.

  • Janaye Barker

    Janaye is the Assistant Director for Executive Programs and program coordinator for the Master of Advanced Studies in International Affairs (MAS-IA) degree program at GPS, where she provides administrative support to prospective and current students and is responsible for program marketing efforts. Janaye is also responsible for academic advising and coordinating special events. She has worked with international students at EF International Language School and Kaplan International and was an academic personnel coordinator at UC Santa Barbara with the Classics and East Asian Departments. Janaye received her B.A. in Sociology and Spanish from UC Santa Barbara and her M.A. in Postsecondary Educational Leadership with an emphasis in Student Affairs from San Diego State University. She also holds a Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) Certification from UC Santa Barbara Extension.

    Matthew is an academic advisor and program coordinator for International Studies Program (ISP) where he is responsible for providing academic support to students and assisting in programs. He graduated from UC San Diego in 2019 with a B.S. in social psychology in hopes of working in Student Affairs. Before ISP, he worked at university centers as an event coordinator where he planned and coordinated over 700 student organization events at UC San Diego's Price Center.
  • Corey Wylde Fujikawa

    Corey is an academic advisor and program coordinator with the International Studies Program (ISP) where he provides academic support to current students and is responsible for data analysis for the program. He holds a Master of International Affairs degree from GPS with a specialization in International Development and Nonprofit Management. Prior to working with ISP and while at GPS, he worked as a Producer and Director for national television networks where the majority of his clients were members of Congress, legal experts, and on-air personalities. Corey credits his interest in education to his parents, who are both educators, and has worked as a guest teacher in San Diego with students ranging from kindergarten to high school seniors at UC San Diego's Preuss School.

    Amy graduated from UC San Diego with a B.A. in International Studies - Political Science. After graduating, she worked at UC San Diego as an Intake Advisor for the International Studies Program. She left the university and spent two years teaching English in Myanmar. She was also an innovation strategist for various social enterprise start-ups in Southeast Asia. As a globetrotter, she witnessed the power of tech and its ability to create positive change and economic mobility for local communities. She returned to the Bay Area to hone technological skills in web development and design thinking methods.
